New from TEC72

West Midlands based Office Interior Design Solutions company TEC72 are pleased to announce the launch of their latest unique product range, along with the relaunch of their company Website.

TEC72 approached multi-award winning furniture and product designer David Fox Designs to produce a bespoke modular seating system titled the “Bean” ands its smaller brother the “Pod”.

The concept is a change from the conventional linking or bench seating system. The “beans” organic shape draws inspiration from the natural fluid shape of a Bean, and can be loosely arranged to form relaxing interior landscapes, or set in a more regimented side-by-side or back-to-back format to meet the schemes perspective. The “Pod” combines effortlessly as part of this modular solution. Manufactured from wooden frames with CMHR foams, the “Bean” and “Pod” can be covered in a choice of contract fabrics, and is finished by chrome or powder coated steel rails, to appear to hover seamlessly above the floor.

TEC72 Managing Director, Duncan Godwin commented, “The Bean & Pod are unique in their design, and working with someone of the calibre of David has been a pleasure.” He added, “We are already seeing huge interest in the product, and have already installed the system at a number of sites in the UK”.

TEC72 are a multi-disciplinary interior design & bespoke furniture manufacturer and supplier, who provide unique solutions to working environments and front of house solutions to the Corporate and Public Sector.

Formed in 2010, TEC72’s Senior Management Team have over 35 years experience in delivering projects of the highest quality. The “Bean” and “Pod” can be viewed at the TEC72 showroom in Halesowen, West Midlands, or on the companies new website www.tec72.co.uk

A London Design Festival Special

To mark this year’s London Design Festival It’s Nice That and The Lollipop Shoppe will be producing 5,000 copies of a free magazine designed to complement the official festival guide and the Icon guide. It will be sent out to selected people in the industry that both parties work with and also handed out at tube stations, because a key part of the project is to bring this huge design event to the attention of those who might not even know it’s happening.

Within the magazine there will be features focusing on the different areas of design represented at the festival, interviews with key figures in the design world and some hints and tips for complete beginners looking to experience what the festival has to offer for the first time. So we have Wayne Hemingway on why Britain is so creative (it’s the weather apparently), James Dyson on how we must use education to make sure we don’t have a lost design generation, Deyan Sudjic, Felix de Pass and others on their festival hopes, a tour of London’s hidden design gems and our own guide to this year’s must-see shows.

The intention is, for the magazine to have the authority to appeal to those in the creative industries but also to be accessible enough for those who have never attended a festival event before.

AUTUMN WINTER 2011 IS PERFECTLY NATURAL

Autumn Winter 2011 at Heal’s is Perfectly Natural. Launching in-store and online, this season’s main trend is a showcase of contemporary and designer furniture and accessories in beautifully crafted natural materials and textiles in organic tones.

A celebration of genuine craftsmanship and design, our sophisticated and stylish Autumn hot picks will make a house feel like a home, a haven of calm, warmth and comfort, providing a sense of reassurance in a world of flat packed, won’t-last-till-teatime home furnishings.

Wood is deeply ingrained in Heal’s heritage and within this naturals trend we see a mix of wood finishes. Solid wood furniture in walnut, oak, ash and beech and luxurious leather furniture prevail over modern alternatives such as high gloss lacquers and glass.

Key pieces in furniture include: the Chill sofa in tan leather, the Hi-ho adult rocking horse, Cowhide dining chairs and the Twist nest of tables by Kirsty Whyte for Heal’s Discovers.

Nature, home and Heal’s; three reassuringly timeless concepts that will never go out of fashion. Touch wood.

FRITZ HANSEN LAUNCH LONDON FLAGSHIP STORE DURING THE LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL IN SEPTEMBER 2011

Republic of Fritz Hansen™, the world's most revered Danish furniture design brand, is joining forces with Skandium, London's much-loved Scandinavian design emporium, to launch the first Republic of Fritz Hansen store in the UK – during the London Design Festival (17-25 September 2011).
The Republic of Fritz Hansen flagship store will be in the heart of London’s Fitzrovia district, and will uniquely showcase the entire furniture collection by Fritz Hansen alongside a specially curated range of the best interior accessories by some of the most premium Scandinavian design brands such as Iittala, Georg Jensen and Louis Poulsen.
The UK's love affair with Scandinavian design, which is all about clean, classically modern and fuss free interiors, is set to grow this Autumn, as the pared down aesthetic dominates design trends, with refined furniture pieces and neutral toned textiles conveying timelessness, sustainability and craftsmanship - perfect for today's economic climate of considered purchases..

Throughout its near 140-year history, Fritz Hansen has produced a rich portfolio of furniture classics, thanks to a series of partnerships with visionary designers and architects, including Arne Jacobsen, Verner Panton, Hans J. Wegner, Poul Kjærholm and Jaime Hayón, who designed the new FAVN™ sofa to be launched on the market in September 2011 and which will also be available at the new store. Many of the company's furniture designs are instantly recognisable, such as Arne Jacobsen’s Egg™ and Swan™ chairs.
A joint venture with Skandium – London's foremost retailer of contemporary Scandinavian furniture, lighting and kitchenware for the home and office – Skandium has sourced exclusive pieces and hand picked collections that will be initially available for sale exclusively at the Republic of Fritz Hansen Store. This includes a comprehensive glassware showcase, vintage and contemporary Danish accessories, and a discerning range of cookware and inspirational lifestyle books.
The Republic of Fritz Hansen Store makes a welcome and timely addition to London's design retail scene, and is set to be a veritable haven of Scandinavian cool, housing the dream combination of both design brands under one roof. The store's interior design and layout will exemplify Scandinavian design, with clean, simple lines and natural materials.
Housed in a magnificent duplex space in a period building, the store commands a prominent position, cornering Margaret Street and Great Titchfield Street. Large, double-volume windows flank both streets, which will be filled with enticing room set displays showcasing the very best and latest Fritz Hansen furniture and Scandinavian products. The store aims to be London's leading design pitt stop where buyers, interior designers, architects, stylists, journalists and design fans can meet, source the latest Scandinavian design offerings and be inspired.
Jan Vejsholt, Fritz Hansen's Vice President, UK and Ireland, comments: “We see enormous potential for Scandinavian design in one of the world’s most creative and design led cities. Our shared appreciation for quality design makes the Fritz Hansen and Skandium partnership the perfect combination for creating a successful Scandinavian retail experience."

“We are honoured to have been invited to help realise the retail vision of such a legendary Scandinavian manufacturer as Fritz Hansen," says Magnus Englund, Managing Director for Skandium. "Given free hands to come up with a selection of accessories that underline the Fritz Hansen brand… we're looking forward to the public’s impression of the latest addition to London's great design shops."

STEELCASE LAUNCHES ROOMWIZARD II

Steelcase, global leaders in office furniture and workplace solutions, have launched their new RoomWizard II, an innovative product helping teams organise meetings and book public spaces.

According to a recent Steelcase Workplace Survey, 40% of workers waste up to thirty minutes a day searching for a place to do group work.* The RoomWizard seeks to drastically reduce this.

How people go about scheduling space varies widely within organisations, between buildings and across individual spaces. First-come-first-serve, post-it notes and even corporate calendar systems haven’t proven effective.

The newly redesigned RoomWizard is a web-based room scheduling system that solves this dilemma, allowing employees to easily book rooms or spaces ahead of time. With its easy ‘Red Light/Green Light’ feature, it is easier than ever to see at a glance what areas are free.

Kim Williams of Steelcase explained: “In today’s interconnected business world, workers need to be able to collaborate without being interrupted. With RoomWizard II when workers need a space to meet, whether it’s open or closed, they can reserve it instantly and get to work.”

RoomWizard works with a variety of calendaring systems, allowing meeting spaces to be managed via web, laptop or smart phone. It can also be controlled directly from its touch screen face.

It can also be used with Steelcase’s Snap Tag App. The iPhone app captures whiteboard notes, connects with RoomWizard II and sends the content directly to meeting participants.

Arper awarded its first Compasso d’oro

Nuur
Design by Simon Pengelly

Nuur is the archetypal table: a single, spare plane floats above four slender legs. The result is aesthetically pure but flexible. A universal system based on the simple principle of four corner legs, four rails and a top, Nuur adapts to diverse applications and environments.

Table tops are available in square or rectangular formats in either colored laminate or wood veneer. The structure is available in polished or painted aluminum.

The Compasso d’Oro has marked its 22nd edition with a prestigious ceremony in Rome. The leading Italian design prize recognises excellence in project work, products and research. This year Arper’s Nuur table has been awarded the Compasso d’Oro.

Recently, La Pelanda - the Testaccio branch of Rome’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MACRO) - hosted the triennial Compasso d’Oro award ceremony. The award was conceived by Gio Ponti in 1954 and is promoted by the Industrial Design Association (ADI).

An international jury, made up of 8 members from both academia and the professional world, was presided over by Arturo Dell’Acqua Bellavitis. The panel awarded 19 projects from over 200 entries which are now on display in the La Pelanda exhibition until September 25th, 2011. The jury commented that the Nuur table was awarded for its feeling of exceptional lightness and attention to detail in its design.

Arper’s CEO, Claudio Feltrin, who founded the company in 1989 with his father Luigi and brother Mauro, said “receiving the Compasso d’Oro is a very important goal for Arper; the jury’s decision on Nuur gratifies all of us and represents an acknowledgment of our company’s production skills and effectiveness. Over the past ten years, we have invested heavily in research, technology, environmental sustainability, communication and our commercial network, a complex commitment at the core of product projects, and design and functionality. Being awarded the Compasso d’Oro encourages us to keep on track, developing the policies and choices that Arper has made so far”.

Frame Moooi Award 2012

Frame and Moooi are joining forces. The interior design magazine and design label have created an award to raise the bar for furniture and interior design to an all-new level.
Frame and Moooi are both innovators, with Frame focusing on cutting-edges interiors and Moooi striving to be the ultimate word in furniture and lighting. Combining the interests of both organizations, the Frame Moooi Award will target interior designers and architects with the desire to custom create a lamp or furnishing for a specific interior. There’s just one condition: these must be products that can lead a life outside the interior for which they have been designed.
The talented and internationally-celebrated Philippe Starck will be judging the award, which kicks off on the 1st of September 2011 when the online application system will open at www.framemoooi.com. When the application period closes on the 1st of December 2011, the entries will be sent to Starck, who will review each of the projects. His shortlisted candidates will be revealed on the 15th of March, 2012.
Frame and Moooi are looking forward to crowning the winner with a jaw-dropping prize of €25,000. The winner will be announced in April at a special award ceremony during the Salone del Mobile in Milan 2012.
The Frame Moooi Award prompts designers to unite innovative interiors with equally as innovative furniture and lighting. Product designers work on commission for manufacturers, with the goal of production and reproduction.
On the other hand, architects and interior designers make furniture and lighting that satisfy an architectural need, respond to a new function or address a specific problem. Many high-profile pieces of furniture and lighting have been designed for a specific context, such as Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Chair, which was created for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona. Arne Jacobsen designed the Egg Chair in 1958 for the Radisson SAS Hotel in Copenhagen, while the Ear Chair was conceived in 2003 by Jurgen Bey as a mini meeting room for Dutch insurance
company Interpolis.
These and many other iconic products eventually experienced large-scale production and appeared in a wide range of interior projects. Many proved to be so innovative that they earned recognition and inspired others to design similar models. Contextual designs are clearly important for the development of furniture and lighting; they also strengthen the bond between (interior) architects and product designers.
Both Frame and Moooi are eagerly awaiting the opening of the online application system on the 1st of September 2011 and the forthcoming design submissions, which are sure to both impress and strengthen the future of furniture and interior design.

Oh, and then there’s the silver IDEA award in the cateogory of “Office and Productivity”! What is so exciting about this chair? The frameless back – inspired by the spans of the Golden Gate bridge in Behar’s hometown of San Francisco – is the first of its kind. It’s an intelligent suspension system that adapts to a person’s movements while providing proper support. It successfully treads that fine line between ergonomics and beautiful design. And it’s affordable. A winning combination.

KALA by Arturo Álvarez

Broken lines, an irregular volume of moving and living appearance that reminds us of the changing drawings made by the sand on the great dunes.

MESH WITH SILICONE: Arturo Álvarez develops a new material from the exploration and mixture of daily life materials, in that way appears the combination between metallic mesh and silicone: flexible, washable, malleable so it allows to obtain big volumes, pleated so to provide with a very warm and wrapping light.

Silicone mesh revolutionizes and thrills the markets with volume, different textures and endless possibilities.

Bean sofa for Tec72

David Fox design is pleased to announce the official product launch of Bean + Pod for http://www.tec72.co.uk/thebeangrn.html

Bean is a modular seating system, the concept is a departure from the conventional linking or bench seating system. The organic shape, draws inspiration and fluidity from the natural shape of a Bean, and how the objects scatter randomly, aesthetically working in harmony with no apparent order.

Manufactured from wooden frames CMHR foams, the sofa and “Pod”, are covered in a choice of contract fabrics or hydes, the chromed or powder coated steel rail hovers seamlessly above the floor, creating a shadow gap, as the uplifting angled shape emerges from the ground.

The shapes can be loosely arranged to form interior landscapes, side by side, back to back, formed in a circular installation, the limitations are endless and driven by the creation of the scheme. The complimentary “P” tables range, offer working or lounging solutions.

“Tec 72 approached me to design a piece of seating for them, after meeting with the team, they offered a dynamic, passionate, and willing to listen approach to developing new product, in-terms of quality, they have been instrumental in ensuring finite detail was adhered to, and have produced a quality product”

“from little acorns grow big oaks, is a design philosophy of David Fox, when design marries with quality craftsmanship, and ambition, then the results can only be a proactive step in the right direction”

The product is upholstered in the Nuna fabric, a David Fox design for http://www.camirafabrics.com/content/samplecentre/products.asp?productid=8972

The FIRA Innovation Showcase offers a unique platform for furniture designers and manufactures to display innovative new furniture products. The Showcase is visited by hundreds of furniture industry professionals on a monthly basis as they visit the headquarters of the Furniture Industry Research Association in Stevenage.
The latest item to be displayed on the showcase is an hm63 seating unit from Hitch Mylius, designed by Nigel Coates.
