Fin Dining Chair by Matthew Hilton
One of Matthew Hilton's most iconic designs is his Fin Dining Chair, which has been used in contract projects worldwide including the University of Oregon Jacqua Center designed by ZGF Architects LLP, and The Olde Bell Inn designed by Studioilse in collaboration with 6a Architects. This solid wood dining chair is an example of both the thoughtful engineering and sculptural nature of Hilton's work. The complex shape is made of 8 components, joined with a combination of lap joints, mortise and tenon joints and locating dowels. Long grain to long grain connections throughout ensure great joinery strength, while CNC machinery allows for the intricate shaping of the form. Ergonomics were carefully considered in the design process, resulting in a chair with outstanding comfort.
