Two Danish Design Giants joined

Two Danish Design Giants joined forces at Salone Internazionale del Mobile

Like Carl Hansen & Søn, the design company Georg Jensen also has a portfolio that includes some of Danish Design’s greatest icons. This has inspired the two brands to enter a creative partnership that has resulted in a spectacular Special Edition created especially for the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2011.

Carl Hansen & Søn, in cooperation with Georg Jensen, will present the new office furniture in a special golden version produced in just one set for the Milan show. Wegner created the new office concept as part of the CH100 series. Carl Hansen & Søn brings workplace aesthetics to the next level with the CH110 desk and accompanying office chairs CH111, CH112 and CH113. All stainless steel parts on the CH110 desk, the CH111 and CH112 chairs, the CH102 sofa and the CH106 coffee table are coated with 24-karat gold. The exclusive detail imbues the furniture with a warm and welcoming glow that will bring a smile to the executive floor.

Knud Erik Hansen, third-generation owner of Carl Hansen & Søn, explains about the special Milan edition:

"Managing a design heritage such as Wegner’s must be done with respect and devotion – something we are very aware of in our daily work. But if anyone was innovative and had an eye to the future, it was Wegner. Therefore we thought it would be interesting to talk to Georg Jensen, and to see what could come of bringing their masterful approach to metalworking together with Wegner’s masterpieces of design. As a designer, Wegner was also something of a contemporary King Midas: much of what he touched turned into golden examples of form meeting function, with a beauty that perseveres for generations.”

HI-MACS® brings a new shape to kitchens and bathrooms

Offering a whole host of properties, since it was formed, the refined HI-MACS® Natural Acrylic Stone has been used to fit out all kinds of interiors and exteriors, making them look most elegant and giving them that touch of design, technology and quality. In fact, the acrylic stone which forms part of the new “solid surface” generation is made up of 70% natural stone powder, 25% high quality acrylic resin and 5% natural pigments. Multi-purpose, HI-MACS® is acclaimed by many a great designer, including David Chipperfield and Zaha Hadid, who have recently used it at the prestigious Hotel Puerta América in Madrid. Its wonderful quality, blending solidness, flexibility and robustness, make HI-MACS® the ideal material for unending modelling and designing, thanks to properties which far outweigh those of more traditionally-used materials. Furthermore, with excellent thermoforming properties, we are now seeing an almost infinite designer product range. Non-porous, HI-MACS® retains its beautiful colours for a long time and is very durable. Plus, its inconspicuous joints make for irreproachable cleanliness. Today, HI-MACS® has turned the history of fitting unique homes over onto a new leaf…! HI-MACS® is an ideal material which will adapt to anything in the home, especially kitchens and bathrooms: as real “living” rooms, their requirements in terms of technical innovation, custom-built storage, not to mention the importance of the aesthetic aspect, are now as critical as those in other rooms. In fact, in the last few years, kitchens and bathrooms have been the two rooms in the house which have changed most. In addition to technical advance, this has also come about through sociological change.

Furniture with growth potential: extendable tables

"Thonet 1130"; Designer: Naoto Fukasawa

'Which piece of furniture plays a more dominant role in your life? Your table or your bed? Most of us have both, but whereas a new phase of life or a new relationship often tends to make us exchange a narrow bed for a wider one, without expecting to have to downsize again, many people prefer to retain a certain amount of flexibility in the size of their table. Accommodating one or two people only or a group, extendable tables can be adapted to a romantic tète-a-tète, a family with children or even a large festive gathering.'

BE EMBRACED BY FAVN™

FAVN; the Danish name for embrace, is a new sofa designed by Jaime Hayon for Fritz Hansen.

The new sofa is the result of a creative dialogue and will be launched during the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2011 at Republic of Fritz Hansen's showroom in Milan."I wanted the sofa to be based on a shell. A shell being hard on the outside, soft and welcoming on the inside." Says Jaime Hayón. "I wanted to create a form that embraces you, something really organic - that's why we named it FAVN." Hayón continues.

Recognized by his fresh, colourful and extrovert design style, the award winning artist-designer is the most recent addition to Fritz Hansen's family tree of designers. Hayón carries forward Fritz Hansen's long tradition of working with some of the world's most talented architect and designers.

"FAVN is an evolution of Fritz Hansen's design language that brings together the qualities of Spanish and Danish design". Says Jaime Hayón. "FAVN is picking up from the long tradition of Arne Jacobsen in the sense that I wanted to create a form that was based on a shell, like the Egg™ and the Swan™ which looks equally beautiful from all angles." Hayón continues.

FAVN is the result of an experimental dialogue and presents an honest interpretation of Fritz Hansen's design values. It represents a true reflection of Fritz Hansen's ambition to achieve sustainable quality in crafting timeless design.

The new sofa is presented in ten unique Designer Selections; light grey, sage green, clear beige, taupe, chocolate, moutarde, red, violet, dark blue and black. It includes a mix of three fabrics to express the form of its three main components; the shell, seat and back and decorative cushions. The combination of texture and tone is appealing to the visual and emotional senses.

FAVN will be launched at Republic of Fritz Hansen's showroom in Milan on Corso Garibaldi, 77 during the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2011. The new sofa will be available to purchase from Republic of Fritz Hansen stores and selected authorized Republic of Fritz Hansen dealers from around the world as of September 2011.

Danish design classics at the office

Carl Hansen & Søn relaunches Wegner office concept Hans J. Wegner was a pioneering force in uniting form and function. Carl Hansen & Søn demonstrates this once again when the Danish furniture producer presents a new office furniture concept at Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2011 in Milan Pavilion 5, stand E01. Full of thoughtful details and created with unparalleled craftsmanship, with this furniture it’s not just another day at the office! Wegner created the new office concept as part of the CH100 series. Now, Carl Hansen & Søn brings workplace aesthetics to the next level with the CH110 desk and accompanying office chairs CH111, CH112 and CH113. Flawless surfaces of luxurious materials such as oak, walnut and leather exude calm and authority, while the curved legs in polished stainless steel bring a natural softness to the minimalistic design. Typical Wegner. 1 desk - 3 chairs Wegner designed the four pieces in 1970 as part of his larger office series. Carl Hansen & Søn has crafted the relaunch according to Wegner’s original drawings and specifications. Also here, as is clearly revealed in the desk, the devil is in the details. The lustrous desktop rests effortlessly on brushed stainless steel legs. The symmetrical desk drawers are handcrafted with dovetail joints, and their custom handles are ingeniously constructed so they do not pull loose even after years of use. The desk is available in oak or walnut, oiled or lacquered. But what is a desk without a chair? As the master of chair design, Hans J. Wegner also had a few ideas about office seating. He created no fewer than three chairs to complement the CH110 desk – all for different work situations. The robust construction of the CH111 chair makes it perfect for working at a desk or at a conference table. It is built on a frame of solid beech wood. With stainless steel legs and sidepieces, it achieves a discreet beauty that deserves to be seen from any angle. It is available in leather or fabric, with or without upholstered armrests. CH112 and CH113 are variations on a single chair design. Both the conference chair (CH113) and the lower easy chair (CH112) are made of steel and saddle leather, with or without upholstered armrests. With their minimalistic construction, both chairs are ideal in the conference or boardroom, or as stylish design statements in the office. The new designs will be available early summer 2011. www.carlhansen.com
