Livery Company launches new sustainability award for British furniture manufacturers
The efforts of British furniture manufacturers to become greener are to be recognised by a new annual award from the industry’s Livery company, the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers.
The Furniture Makers Sustainability Award is open to British manufacturing members of the Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme (FISP) administered by FIRA International and which aims to recognise improvements in furniture manufacturing sustainability. There are currently 65 eligible companies in the scheme and they are being invited to compete for the new award.
The trophy will be awarded to the company which, in the judges’ opinion, has made the most notable improvements in sustainable manufacturing during 2011, in such areas as environmental waste, energy, packaging and transport management, purchasing policies, employment, training and education. The judges will take into account the size of the business concerned so that the relative importance of the progress can be measured.
The winner will be presented with the trophy next May by the Master of the Company at its annual Installation Dinner in the Mansion House in the City of London. It will be retained for one year. Shortlisted entrants will also be offered the opportunity to apply for a Manufacturing Guild Mark.
A distinguished panel of judges will consider the entries which need to be received by November 25. They are:-
Hugh Garforth-Bles, Master of the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers
David Walton, chairman of the Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme Steering Committee
Stephen McPartland, Member of Parliament, Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Furniture Group
Barbara Chandler, freelance writer, journalist and photographer
A representative from FIRA will act as technical advisor to the judges.

Last chance to visit The Living Room
Stop by for a biscuit and feel free to ask about the prices of any pieces that catch your eye as many of them can be purchased directly from the exhibition.
The Living Room is open daily from 11am 6pm.
GEENEN + HOON exhibits new work by furniture designers Bram Geenen (NL) and Il Hoon Roh (GB).
The Aram Gallery brings together two designers whose work on first sight, appears similar. Geenen + Hoon begin with complementary starting points; both are heavily influenced by the architecture of Antoni Gaudi for example. However, they have quite different ways of working, employing opposite techniques to arrive at superficially alike conclusions.
The exhibition uses Geenen+ Hoon’s works to show how two designers interpret similar influences. It presents a succinct step by step journey from initial sketch to full size piece, to highlight the crossovers in their process. This methodical approach to the presentation of their work intends to demystify how these designers design. In addition it allows for explanations of the materials and processes they use at each stage of their development.
