Danish Royal Couple attends opening of Carl Hansen & Son showroom in New York

Driven by major progress in Europe, Carl Hansen & Son, a Danish-owned furniture manufacturer, is turning its sights on success in the US market and opening an exclusive showroom in New York. The Danish Crown Prince and Princess were among the first guests at the official opening, at this world-class Danish design store.

Knud Erik Hansen (CEO, Carl Hansen & Son) together with HRH Crown Prince Frederik and HRH Crown Princess Mary at the inauguration of Carl Hansen & Son's new showroom in SoHo, New York.

Carl Hansen & Son, a Danish-owned manufacturer of designer furniture, has just officially opened its new 6000 sq. ft. showroom in SoHo, New York, an occasion presided over by HRH Crown Prince Frederik and HRH Crown Princess Mary. Launching the new showroom was also part of the official export drive where exponents of the best in Danish design were represented.

By establishing a showroom and sales organization in New York, Carl Hansen & Son is significantly stepping up its commitment to the US market. “The US has always interested us and was actually one of our first export markets way back in the 1950s. After years of success and significant growth rates in the European market, we have chosen to invest heavily in our US activities to realise the huge potential and growth opportunities in the North American market. Establishing our new showroom is therefore only the first step in building up our organization in the USA,” explains Knud Erik Hansen, CEO.

Carl Hansen & Son's strategy for the US market is to target its activities towards architects and professional buyers. Establishing a showroom is therefore a vital factor in showcasing our range for this target group. The company has achieved this successfully in Copenhagen, Denmark, where an impressive showroom was recently opened in a large industrial-style complex in a thriving new design district.

“We can see that Americans are appreciating elegant and simple designs more and more. A prime example is world-famous Danish architect Hans J. Wegner with his legendary Wishbone Chair,” says Thomas Vagner, President, Americas, adding: “We take American consumers seriously which is why we want to meet their need for shorter delivery times and greater flexibility.”

Carl Hansen & Son's products are sold all over the world through a network of sales subsidiaries in Canada, Japan, China and now the USA as well as through its own sales representations in Hong Kong, the UK, Germany, Norway and Sweden in addition to local agencies. Knud Erik Hansen concludes: “We are expecting a great deal from this initiative and are looking forward to writing a whole new chapter in the multi-faceted story of this century-old, family-run company spanning several generations.”

HI-MACS is key to superb wetroom design

Designed and made by Bespoke Surfaces Ltd, a specialist designer of bespoke kitchen and bathroom designs, their new wetroom display features the solid surface material HI-MACS® which especially lends itself to this type of application.

The floor, walls, vanity unit with integrated basins and wall storage alcoves are all fabricated from HI-MACS® – the natural stone acrylic material with specialist properties like a non-porous, impervious, hygienic and low maintenance surface.

Being a solid surface with seamless joins HI-MACS® obviates in need for grouting where dirt or germs can gather.

The wetroom is a fantastic creation with two Vado shower areas including a Vado Ethos ceiling-mounted shower head surrounded by embedded LED downlights and a wall mounted mirror/TV unit. The other shower area is equipped with dual stalk-mounted heads with the main pad head being adjustable and the other smaller head removable for hand-held use on an integrated chrome hose.

HI-MACS® was also selected for its thermo-formability which didn’t inhibit the designers or fabricators in any way. The floor is HI-MACS® Beach Sand to distinguish it from the walls and units which are all in Nougat Cream.

The vanity unit with integrated twin basins uses standard HI-MACS® basins, (CB465) which proved perfect for the overall project design.

Bespoke Surfaces Ltd says that the special properties and opportunities offered by HI-MACS® as a material was essential to the project and made the whole concept feasible.

A similar bathroom would retail at about £30,000.

Livery Company launches new sustainability award for British furniture manufacturers

The efforts of British furniture manufacturers to become greener are to be recognised by a new annual award from the industry’s Livery company, the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers.

The Furniture Makers Sustainability Award is open to British manufacturing members of the Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme (FISP) administered by FIRA International and which aims to recognise improvements in furniture manufacturing sustainability. There are currently 65 eligible companies in the scheme and they are being invited to compete for the new award.

The trophy will be awarded to the company which, in the judges’ opinion, has made the most notable improvements in sustainable manufacturing during 2011, in such areas as environmental waste, energy, packaging and transport management, purchasing policies, employment, training and education. The judges will take into account the size of the business concerned so that the relative importance of the progress can be measured.

The winner will be presented with the trophy next May by the Master of the Company at its annual Installation Dinner in the Mansion House in the City of London. It will be retained for one year. Shortlisted entrants will also be offered the opportunity to apply for a Manufacturing Guild Mark.

A distinguished panel of judges will consider the entries which need to be received by November 25. They are:-
Hugh Garforth-Bles, Master of the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers
David Walton, chairman of the Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme Steering Committee
Stephen McPartland, Member of Parliament, Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Furniture Group
Barbara Chandler, freelance writer, journalist and photographer

A representative from FIRA will act as technical advisor to the judges.

arturo alvarez - RHIZOME by Matali Crasset, 2011

A metal plate distributed in the space like a mobile element. It is inspired by a rhizomatic structure. The base element forms a suspension waterfall shaped by starting from a central spot branched out in order to diffract the light in a subtle manner.

The lighting source is protected by a core and diverted by white reflecting panels that generate brightness. The endings amplify the gesture of the branches, give them personality and a contemporary flair.

naughtone case study: marchday

The designers for this space utilised the Logan table range to full potential and specified the table in a striking 4m long shape. This is constructed with a simple bolt together frame and 2 part table top, quickly assembled on location due to the simple tube section design of the Logan table. Around the table are the ever popular viv chair, seen here in bright kvadrat divina melange fabric and matching the table base well with white powder coated frames. The space is finished off with a stunning 4m long naughtone sideboard. Again this was specified in matching white colour to tie in with the rest of the furniture and provide a simple backdrop to the buildings art deco features.

Hay Relaunches FDB’s Classic Furniture

70 years after the launch of the first FDB furniture Hay is now taking on production of quite a few of the classic pieces. Functional and democratic design for the people was the thought behind the furniture production FDB started in the 1940’s. “This democratic thought is close to Hay’s philosophy”, says Christian Skovhus, of Icon of Denmark, brand agents for Hay in the UK.

The furniture is an important part of Danish design history and is very apt for now, a period when people have less money to spend on designs for their homes. “It has always been Hays most important task to produce quality and durable designs at a reasonable price, and that is why we are taking on this project” informs Rolf Hay.

The FDB collection from Hay consists of 5 chairs designed by Poul M. Volther, Jorgen Baekmark and Folke Paalsson as well as a table designed by Jorgen Baekmark. The furniture is made from beech and available in beech as well as in black, white, grey and coral.

Prices range from £118 for chairs. The furniture will be available from November.

The collection will be available at the Hay store in Covent Garden
