HI-MACS® Essential Light for Oakley
Offices without personality, utilitarian flooring, suspended modular ceilings and rounded columns covered with plasterboard. These were the characteristics of the space that architects from the studio Machado Arquitectos found at 39 Juan de Austria Street in Barcelona. The challenge? To transform it into the brand new showroom, OAKLEY.
The Studio’s first decision was to empty the space and leave only the essentials: the structure and wall coverings. From that starting point, the main concept was to create an open space where boundaries were blurred, without doors or walls, multiple paths for multiple uses, the simulation of infinite space and light as an integral part of the interior architecture.
“The research for the perfect material that fills all these needs was long and complex, but we finally found the Solid Surface HI-MACS® - an acrylic stone with the ability to be thermoformed, with the rigidity of rock and the incredible ability to be translucent. The boxes were lamps, giant satellites in motion!” says Sebastian Machado.
Two stunning “floating” satellites of different size - rounded light-boxes made out of backlit HI-MACS® Opal - were placed in between the columns, creating independent spaces dedicated to different uses as functional space organizers. The rounded shape of the light-boxes – the main focal point of the showroom - was inspired by Oakley’s brand logo, which are completely suspended and separated from the ceiling, floor and walls.
The Showroom of 350sqm space - with its irregular floor plan - is completed by a reception, bar area and an office.
About Machado Arquitectos
Architectural firm Machado Architects based in Barcelona since year 2004, works on a wide range of projects - from offices, art centers, single and multi family houses to shop fitting - where the common denominator is the constant research for sensitive and evocative spaces, inspired by new ways of living and use of contemporary society, and the research for new generation materials that offer new possibilities to architecture and design.

CARDBOARD FUTURE LTD
The National Magazine Company and London’s prestigious new School of Communication Arts are the latest customers to install Cardboard Future’s 100% sustainable Paperweight Desk.
As the world’s first fully-specified mass production workstation made entirely of cardboard, the desk was launched to media acclaim in February. Early adopters included entrepreneur PY Gerbeau, CEO of X Leisure; US video conferencing company FocusVision Europe; Johnson Controls; and Global Prepaid Exchange. Now Natmags has selected the desks for its hot desk project rooms and advertising and media students at the School of Communication Arts will all be working on cardboard when the school opens on 20th September.
Designed by Mary Dorrington Ward and engineered by Pat Doyle, the Paperweight Desk is manufactured in the UK from 76% recycled paper and is 100% sustainable and recyclable. Built to meet European legislation for strength and stability, it can take up to 100kg and is the first of a series of cardboard furniture products to be launched by Cardboard Future over the next 12 months.
The specially made corrugated board is coated with a highly water-resistant cellulose varnish and can be assembled in just a few minutes. It has full cable management, legs that can be positioned inset or outset, and a top surface that can be used as a dry-wipe board.
No screws, staples, glues or tools are required for assembly. It has a 12-month warranty, or clients can pay a small monthly fee and get the product on a rolling lease which includes a brand new upgraded desk every 18 months!
The launch follows a two year programme of research and prototyping. Cardboard Future chief executive Rod Fountain says: “We are aware that cardboard furniture has enjoyed a mixed press over the last fifty years and it is going to take an exceptional product to win over the cynics. But we think we are launching the right product at the right time – it’s elegant, extremely eco-friendly, and excellent value for money.”
Initially available in pure white, a palate of standard colours will soon be available and customers will also be able to specify their own colours or designs.
“This is a great fun product but it’s also very robust and will last for many years,” says Fountain. “We think it’s a joy to work at because it is soft and forgiving. It is actually quite an intimate product and a very different experience to working at a conventional steel-framed desk.
“We think it has very wide applications and we already have a lot of interest from large public and private sector organisations,” says Fountain. “It looks great in the home, but it’s also a solution to the growing need for flexibility in the workplace. You can have a whole team up and running from scratch in 24 hours with no hassle and very little cost. When the team’s work is finished you can take the desks down and store them in minutes or we will take them back and recycle them into new furniture products.”
Fountain and Dorrington Ward previously worked together at design furniture dealership Roundhere, which was bought by the Hambledon Group of Winchester in March 2008. The Hambledon shop was among the first to stock the Paperweight Desk.

Jordi Blasi is the author of this recycling containers with different formats and capacities. Their shape, a simple abstraction of an open box, makes it easier to put the waste into them. The colour of the inside and the simplicity and conclusiveness of the pictograms clearly identify the type of waste they are holding. A simple formal exercise that turns the iconographic plasticity of a cardboard box into a functional waste container. The adaptability and mobility of the upper part of the containers allows for multiple combinations in different spaces, both in large public areas and in offices and working areas, allowing to create recycling islands.

Danish Crafts at Skandium from November 4th - December 5th 2010
Danish craftspeople and designers present new Danish design in London.
Ongoing cooperation between the recognised British furniture store Skandium and
Danish Crafts now results in a special collection dedicated to Skandium. The
collection is called CC+ for Skandium and is launched on 4 November in London.
On 4 November 2010, Skandium and Danish Crafts launch a bespoke collection of new
Danish craft: CC+ for Skandium. The collection is a result of ongoing cooperation between
Skandium and Danish Crafts and is based on Danish Crafts’ previous successful
collections, the Crafts Collections. The background for the cooperation is the growing
international focus and Skandium’s interest in new Danish craft. The goal is to increase the
sales of Danish craft world-wide and strengthen Danish Crafts’ longstanding branding
efforts. Skandium, which has three design stores in London, has chosen to feature the
collection in their flagship store in London’s leading design district of Brompton.
- Skandium has always focused on Scandinavian design, which is characterised by a very
high level of quality. So far, we have focused mainly on Scandinavian design classics, but
with CC+ for Skandium we are now able to present the new talents in the field of Danish
craft and design, says Magnus Englund, director of Skandium in London.
With assistance from Danish Crafts’ curator for Crafts Collection 14, Nina Tolstrup,
Skandium’s chief buyers have hand-picked 14 of Denmark’s most talented craftspeople.
All the products are curated from Danish Crafts’ previous collections to ensure the artistic
quality and the craftsmanship of the products.

Channels launch 'Gillespie'
British design firm Channels launches a new series of furniture and accessories. The main furniture collection, designed by Samuel Chan, is named Gillespie as tribute to the trumpet leg detail that features throughout the new pieces. The trumpet leg has been used in furniture-making for centuries, usually in a highly decorative form. The Gillespie trumpet leg is a far simpler thing, each one pared down to a piece of solid turned wood. It’s an example of the way Channels revives age-old woodworking principles and provides them with contemporary expression.
The Gillespie collection includes cabinets, tables and seating, adding surprising new silhouettes to the Channels range. Yet it retains the company’s perennial concerns - to achieve beauty, balance and discipline in design and craft.

The CITRUS Lamp - VIBIA
The CITRUS lamp, an original design by Oscar & Sergi Devesa, gives any setting a modern, warm light, with its smart, instantly-recognisable shape recalling a citrus fruit. CITRUS is an invitation to savour everyday moments, lighting them in a way which is both clear and intimate at once.
It is designed to be an ideal size for home settings, with a diameter of 50cm at the widest point and 32 at the narrowest, making CITRUS the ideal lamp for placing over the dining room, living room or kitchen/breakfast room table, as you prefer.
A polyethylene diffuser ensures the light is perfectly distributed, which is extremely comfortable on the eye, avoiding all dazzle. The outside panels of CITRUS can be lacquered in black, white or Bordeaux red to fit perfectly into any kind of setting.
The light source is low energy and adjustable, to supply the desired amount of light at all times.

LITE – an Attractive, Innovative and Rational Stackable Chair from OFFECCT
OFFECCT presents LITE, a new stackable chair/armchair designed by Broberg & Ridderstråle Design & Architecture at this year’s ORGATEC trade fair in Cologne.
LITE is the result of a design brief from OFFECCT, where the assignment was to develop a stackable chair that combined pleasing aesthetics with rational function and design.
"The challenge we gave Broberg & Ridderstråle was to create a chair that whilst playing with the idea of how a stackable chair usually looks like, also meets the demanding requirements from public interiors", says Anders Englund, Design Manager, OFFECCT.
The result was LITE, a stackable chair / armchair characterized by a thin profile and a wide arched back. LITE comes with a very competitive price, combining an attractive design with the stringent requirements of a stackable chair - it is easy to transport and to stack, as well as space-efficient and durable.
"Stackable chairs are often narrow and characterized by a slightly anxious expression. We wanted to create a chair with an inviting wide back that nevertheless could be placed close together", says Mats Broberg from designer duo Broberg & Ridderstråle.
"The comfort has also been an important ingredient in the development process", continues Broberg.
LITE can be fitted with accessories such as an arm rest and a foldable writing tablet. It is possible to connect multiple chairs with a linking device. LITE can also be equipped with a removable upholstery for the back and seat, where the removability makes it possible to use the chair also when the upholstery is being washed.
Broberg & Ridderstråle Design & Architecture is a design firm based in Stockholm, Sweden. They have won several awards such as the Wallpaper Design Award and the Elle Interior Design Price. Previously, Broberg & Ridderstråle has designed the table BIRD for OFFECCT.
