100% Design London

100% Sustainable

Sustainability is a key concept at 100% Design London this year, with a striking number of designers and companies using recycled, recyclable, local and traceable materials. Here is a selection of what's hot and what's new in sustainability to be found at this year's show.

Click here to register for 100% Design London to see the latest innovations in sustainability

Upcycled

A trend in this year's offerings is upcycling. Lucy Turner takes tired pieces of furniture, painstakingly restores them and rids them of decades of oil, wax and grime, and finally breathes new life and style into them with the use of laser-cut and ultre-resistant Formica.

Other exhibitor's transforming something old into something new include Sarah-Jayne Guest who transforms vintage furniture with her vibrant fabric's and duo Miss Print who adorn vintage sideboards with new designs and make wallpaper from managed forests- new lines at the show.

Local and Traditional Skills

As part of Hidden Art's contribution to 100% Design, Alexena Cayless is showing her Cheany Chair, which was upholstered in tweed and leather and championed traditional shoe-making techniques.

Working and manufacturing locally keeps carbon emissions down; using old locally-based crafts and skills keeps them alive and well. Cornwall-based lighting and furniture company MARK believe in ethics and sustainability, manufacturing 80% of their products in Cornwall.

In the same way recent graduate James Michael Shaw (who recently won the New Designers 100% Design Award) is showing a sleek and utilitarian range of items made using the traditional and fast-disappearing craft of metal spinning.

Nest - Textured neutrals

Create simple textured illusions in a cosy, calm and comfy environment with Nest’s selection of textured neutrals.

The Established & Sons No4 Crate Series Storage Cabinet in yellow pine offers a raw take on the in-vogue wooden look.

Adding the Diamantini & Domeniconi Wood Pill Wall Clock will give you a sleeker finish, however if you are looking for a softer look why not try the Nani Marquina Roses Rug.

Creating a comfy hide-away this Autumn is simple with the naughtone Track Corner Sofa teamed with the E15 Alex Side Table - a great example of how you can create this look using neutrals.

As for lighting, the &Tradition Corium Pendant Lamp in natural leather will create a sleek, simple and unusual look, however if you are looking for a centre-piece to hang from your ceiling, maybe the Moooi White Random Suspension Light is for you.

Nests’ Fantastic Four

Nest is excited to announce they’ve added four fantastic new brands to their extensive range.
The new additions include Anglepoise, Skitsch, Decode and Artek.

Anglepoise was first created over 70 years ago and has created table lamps and table lights that are unmistakably British design classics, for example the Original 1227 Desk Lamp.

Recently formed Skitsch offers a new way of doing design, by bringing together established and emerging designers to create functional and emotive products. The Squilibri Bookcase is a perfect example, where three rectangular modules are stacked together in an unbalanced manner, creating a zero gravity effect.

Decode’s focus is on providing products inspired by industrial production and making them accessible and innovative. Nest love the Heavy Desk Light designed by Benjamin Hubert and awarded the British Design of the Year in 2009 by Elle Decoration.

Artek offer simple, structured furniture that exudes classical elegance. The 42 Armchair is minimal and well balanced and would fit perfectly into most homes.

For even more inspirational ideas for the home and garden and 1000’s of products to search and buy, visit www.nest.co.uk or pop into their new showroom in Sheffield.

KI HAVE A NEW SHOWROOM DESIGN AFTER DEVASTATING FLOOD

KI were hit by a devastating flood in their showroom and offices due to a plumbing leak over a weekend in the office floor above.
So severe was the damage that a full strip out is required on both floors and all Sales and Sales Support, Customer Service, Logistics and Finance staff have moved into temporary offices at Holborn Gate, further along High Holborn, adjacent to Chancery Lane tube. Business has continued here as normal, despite the additional operational challenges. A temporary showroom has also been created at Holborn Gate. The same contact numbers and email addresses apply.
Scott Brownrigg Interior Design who are located nearby have been appointed to design a new scheme for KI’s showroom. The new scheme will feature many new UK product lines and provide more meeting and breakout / third space facilities for the company and its visitors.
As explained by Scott Brownrigg Interior Design:
"KI manufactures well-designed, durable furniture for the business and education sectors and is a leader in producing award-winning products. To reflect their status within the market, the refurbishment of their existing showroom, conference room and reception area will create sleek and flexible space with feature lighting. Within the showroom light rafts will be suspended from the ceilings with individual track lights mounted to beams for more localised lighting of products. Sliding doors within the main conference room will allow it to be opened up to become a large client presentation area, complete with a client refreshment area and canopy bar."
KI expects to complete the refurbishment and be back in occupation by September. Expect an exciting new showroom opening event, with many new products on display, to follow soon afterwards.
Please visit the KI website on www.kieurope.com or telephone 020 7404 7441 for more information.

Wallpaper Magazine gives you the Editor's pick of 100% Design London

Well-built, good-looking and long-lasting –it's a standard checklist but one that it's all too easy to be distracted from when there is so much on the market vying for attention. Happily, this year, meticulously crafted woodwork, clean lines and simple, highly refined forms are the order of the day at 100% Design. With a hearty nod (and perhaps a wink and a wave too) to midcentury modernism, furniture designers and makers are once again seeing the value of functionality and efficiency, but never at the expense of form or accessibility, values Wallpaper* has always held close.

These wooden box shelves by master carpenter and designer Alex Hellum are the perfect hallway hideaway for letters, keys and coins.

Pottinger + Cole's elegant easy chair shows a bent for designing with plywood. In this instance, it's combined with beech legs.

Russell Pinch's solid walnut and elm ‘Imo’ folding stools can be used indoors and out and look better with time. They are tactile, well-crafted and store away easily, although we can’t bring ourselves to hide them.

Norwegian designer Andreas Engesvik pushes the envelope with this elegant design for Fjord Fiesta in oak and walnut, while subtle curls at the edges cleverly ensure it won't fall off the edge.

This side table by Simen Aarseth has been designed to be as simple as possible, with its three removable ash legs neatly slotting into the Corian top with no need for screws or nails.
