In the grand scheme of Scandinavian design, Norway has generally taken a back seat.
Denmark, Sweden and Finland pushed ahead in the region's golden age of the 1950s and 1960s with the likes of Saarinen, Panton and Jacobsen, whose designs defined an era. Of course, in the 1970s and 1980s Norway turned out success stories of its own – Peter Opsvik's Trip Trapp chair has sold in the millions and he also redefined office seating

Colebrook Bosson Saunders was founded in 1990, drawing upon the skills of architecture (Martyn Colebrook), product design and innovation (Peter Bosson) and furniture design (Brenda Saunders) to create new and innovative products for the workplace. The Company’s unique approach quickly redefined workplace ergonomics and has heavily influenced how people sit and work with computers. Colebrook Bosson Saunders pioneered the design and development of new product types, some of which were among the first monitor supports, CPU cradles and laptop supports.
Colebrook Bosson Saunders’ first office was on (the now fashionable) Hoxton Square in Shoreditch, London. As the company grew there was a need for more space and Colebrook Bosson Saunders bought and moved to new premises in Kennington in South East London. Multiscreen is a good example of one of these technical fabrics. Silent Gliss Multiscreen has been woven by a special process to produce three different openness factor . The higher openness factor the greater amount of natural light allowed into the room. So you could use a 10% openness factor on a north facing window and a 5% or 1% openness where you want to use computers/televisions whilst still maintaining an overall interior scheme.

The accreditation means that the installation processes used by B&Q have passed a rigorous series of tests to ensure that installation in customers’ homes is carried out to the highest standards each and every time.

FIRA Gold Product Certification provides a mark of excellence for furniture products, signifying that products are of a high quality and produced at a consistently high standard.
Anco has received the certification for Freewall, a storagewall system. Freewall offers unlimited scope to create efficient storage systems in any office environment, with flexible units which are designed to fit from floor to ceiling and from wall to wall, maximising the amount of space available.
Freewall is fitted to tailor the needs of the office and offers an array of unit styles that meet the demands of today's dynamic businesses. The FIRA Gold Product Certification scheme is backed by an ongoing re-audit and re-test programme to ensure that having achieved FIRA Gold Certification, the standard is maintained. There is also an annual factory audit to ensure that the factory produces the product to the same standards as the original assessment of the furniture. This means a review of production procedures, design changes and an examination of the complaint record ensures that any adverse trends are spotted and resolved as soon as possible.

Levent Caglar, FIRA International’s chief Ergonomist, has been working on the new standard, which launched 1 July.
For the past two years, Levent and the European office furniture standards committee (CEN TC SC3 WG2) have been studying the sizes of Europeans and compiling data to drive a revision of the current industry standard for desk dimensions.
The results of the study found that over the past 30 – 40 years, people have been increasingly growing taller; however, the industry standard for desk dimensions has not accommodated this change. Instead, people have been working at desks designed to standards based on the estimated sizes of people in the 1970’s, meaning that the body sizes of today’s workforce does not match that of their office workstation. Being 180 cm (6ft) tall might have been rare in the 1970’s, but now you have to be 190 or 200 cm (6 ft 4) to be noticed.
Levent Caglar said, “Taller workers have dealt with the constant struggle of having their legs hitting the underside of the desktop, knees knocking into structural beams and the inability to stretch their legs without hitting an obstruction such as modesty panels or under desk CPU mounts. However, with the new standard for office desk dimensions coming into force, this is set to change.”
The previous office desk/table standard, BS EN 527 Part 1:2000, has now been revised with the new standard, BS EN 527-1 2011. Full details of the new standards for office desks are available on the FIRA website
The revised standard means that any desks bought or designed for an office environment will now have to comply with a new set of height, depth and legroom dimensions. The revision requires larger legroom and greater ranges of adjustability.
The standard provides dimensional requirements for four types of desk/tables; those which are fully adjustable; height selectable; fixed height, as well as a type where only very limited adjustability is provided.
Manufacturer, SBFI Ltd, is the first manufacturer to produce desks to comply with the new standard. Their Axess-Ergo range of dealer desks offers all four types of desk included within the revised standard and they are fully compliant with the new standard.
Commenting on the SBFI Ltd, Axess-Ergonomic range Levent Caglar said, “SBFI, a leading dealer desking manufacturer, have always worked closely with FIRA’s Ergonomics Unit to keep them informed of the latest developments in ergonomics. This approach has enabled them to design and manufacture, not only a premium product but a product, which complies with the latest standards.”
FIRA’s Ergonomics team have been fully involved with this new standard and can offer immediate ergonomic evaluation to this new standard.

The BuzziHub is a space where people can easily come together and share information. It has been designed to become a central point in the social life of an office. It can serve as a non formal meeting room as people increasingly come to the office in order to connect with each other and not just work by themselves since they might already be working part-time at home or on the road.
When two BuzziHubs are used face to face they can really been seen as a micro-architecture, an enclosed cocoon. The BuzziHub is a new typology of product clearly facilitating and addressing the needs of today: instantaneity, privacy and the need to share information and communicate.
The BuzziHub has been designed in order to make you feel at home. It is a warm and comfortable environment made to facilitate communication and improve personal wellbeing.
It can be used as a module with which architects can play with in order to define spaces, bring warmth and perspectives to larger open areas.
The BuzziHub is available in several colors (pink, lime, orange, grey, black, white,… ) and can also be customized using different color combinations. It is made of recycled fabric.

FIRA ergonomics specialist Levent Caglar recently shared his ergonomics expertise with students by judging a Kinnarps Workplace Furniture design competition.
The competition, hosted by Kinnarps, was held as part of the WCFM Manchester Student Tour 2011, with the theme ‘homeworker furniture’. Thirty two furniture design students from 14 educational centres across the UK entered the competition.
A part of the competition the students examined Kinnarps products and then presented their initial ‘homeworker’ furniture ideas to their peers and the judges.
The judging panel consisted of Levent Cagler, Senior Consultant Ergonomist and Head of the FIRA Ergonomics Unit, Marc Bird, Head of Marketing, Kinnarps, Thomas White, Senior Creative Designer, Kinnarps and Colin Morrell from the student training committee.
The overall winning design was a ‘winged table’ by Ben Croft, from Oxford and Cherwell Valley College. Ben’s prize will be a visit to the Kinnarps Factory in Kinnarp, Sweden with Alex Gifford, Head of Design Kinnarps UK and the Product Development Team for Kinnarps AB.
Speaking on Ben’s design, Levent said, “Ben’s winged table idea showed he had considered physiology and psychology in his design as well as conceiving a product that would be comfortable, safe and efficient for people to use. These are all elements which contribute to an ergonomically sound product.”
Levent Caglar said, “It was an honour to be asked to join the panel of judges for the Kinnarps competition and a great opportunity to meet so many talented young furniture designers. There were some really innovative and well thought-out ideas presented as part of the competition which made choosing a single winner a difficult decision to make. It was great that FIRA, as a furniture industry leader, were able to take part in the event. We are very happy to support and develop the furniture industry by working with young designers.”
Levent and his team at FIRA apply their knowledge of subjects such as engineering, anatomy, physiology, psychology and design to ensure that products and environments are comfortable, safe and efficient for people to use. They not only use this expertise to assist with product and work place design but also work to resolve problems associated with health and safety orders audits, furniture specifications, product assessment and much more.

It is a small coffee table made of a 12mm corian tabletop and European oak legs.
When designing, they concentrated on the subtle details. Tapering the oak leg by a few millimeters and filleting the tabletop corners. The mounting holes gently hug the legs at an angle to expressing a hint of fluidity. And the tabletop somehow appears more flat because of the clarity it gives off in a room.
